Fr Derek Akker

Fr. Derek and his wife Sue will be joining us from Sunday 18 March until Sunday 29 April, staying in the chaplaincy flat during that period. Derek and Sue live in retirement in Bury, just outside Manchester. They have two married sons and four grandsons.

Fr. Derek was ordained in 1988 after careers in social work and community development. For most of his ministry he and Sue lived and served in Urban Priority Area parishes, the last 10 years in Hattersley, an estate built by Manchester City Council in the 1960′s. It was the poorest parish in the Chester Diocese but one with a great spirit. They both miss the parish and its people.
Derek had to retire in 2009 due to a chest condition but derives much satisfaction
from assisting parishes during an interregnum. Derek and Sue are no strangers to the Diocese as their last locum was in Lanzarote. We very much look forward to welcoming them over the Easter period to a probably less warm but hopefully sunny Holland!

[Episcopal News Service] Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams delivers a sermon March 11 at St. Paul’s Within the Walls, an Episcopal Church parish and the first non-Roman Catholic church to be built inside the walls of Rome. The St. Paul’s congregation was joined by members of All Saints Anglican Church in Rome, a parish in the Church of England’s Diocese in Europe, for the service.

On March 10, Williams and Pope Benedict XVI prayed together during an ecumenical vespers service at San Gregorio Magna al Celio in Rome to mark the 1000th anniversary of the founding of Italy’s Camaldoli monastic community. The service was attended by many Anglicans and Episcopalians, including Bishop Pierre Whalon of the Convocation of Episcopal Churches in Europe and the Rev. Austin Rios, rector of St. Paul’s Within the Walls.
